Matching our electricity use with 100% renewable energy
We’re proud to operate one of the world’s largest corporate renewable energy portfolios, with over 11,700 megawatts (MW) contracted globally and over 6,700 MW online in the US, making us the largest corporate buyer in the US in 2023.
We continue matching our electricity use with renewable energy by adding new wind and solar projects to local grids, including those where our data centers are located.

Enabling the transition to renewable energy
We partner with many of the largest utilities in the U.S. to add renewable energy onto their systems in ways that benefit both Meta and other customers. Not all utilities offer electric rates (or tariffs, as utilities call them) that allow customers to support their facilities with renewable energy projects. When this is the case, we work with utility partners to create green tariffs that provide our facilities, and other energy customers, with the opportunity to pursue renewable energy projects via their electricity service.

Fostering a more reliable grid
We’ve partnered with Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and other leading companies on ZEROgrid, the Zero Emissions | Reliability Optimized Grid Initiative. ZEROgrid encourages corporate climate investments to achieve truly zero emissions and a more reliable grid.

Decarbonizing global supply chains
Along with five other corporations, Meta launched the Clean Energy Procurement Academy (CEPA) to support decarbonization of global supply chains. CEPA encourages renewable energy purchases through education, providing training to help suppliers rapidly mature as clean energy customers.

Developing GHG accounting
Meta has joined several leading companies on the Emissions First partnership, a set of new objectives and principles to update purchased electricity GHG emissions accounting systems (Scope 2) and help ensure we have clear ways to measure emissions reductions to unlock decarbonization investments at scale.

Mesa, az case study
Renewable energy storage
In partnership with the local electrical utility and the renewable developer Ørsted, a 300 MW solar farm and 300 MW, four-hour battery energy storage system will be constructed. This solar plus storage project will help support our Mesa, AZ data center with 100% renewable energy.
